About this event

The Prince Consort Engine will be in Steam.

Join us for a day of discovery and learning in our three listed buildings and see the four Victorian beam engines, one of which has been fully restored by volunteers and will be steaming throughout the day.

You can explore the history of this iconic location, learning more about the crucial role it played in London's 'ground-breaking' sewerage system which continues to serve the capital today, and visit the "The Great Stink Exhibition" which shows why this feat of Victorian civil and mechanical engineering was so badly needed.

There is an admission charge for this event - plus booking fees:

Aged 16 and over - £18.00, Age 5-15 - £4.00, Under 5 free.

Light refreshments are available from our Coffee Shop and be sure to visit the shop where you'll find a great selection of gifts and souvenirs - some made by volunteers at Crossness.

Children can join the Learning Team for a free Make and Take craft activity and can explore the Crossness site with our children’s Activity Trail.

Tickets: we have two time slots: from 10.00 to 12.15 or 12.30 to 15.00 and you can can arrive any time within your chosen time slot.

Public Transport: The nearest station is Abbey Wood on the Elizabeth Line [and Southeastern Trains] - we will be running a free vintage Routemaster shuttle bus from the station to our gates.

Parking: about 600m from the main building and our Narrow Gauge Railway will be running to bring you to the main site from the car-parking area. Blue badge holders will be able to park much closer to the building.

Cycling/Walking: You can reach us via the Thames Path - our gate to the path will be open for this Steaming Day.

Doors open 10.00 with last entry at 15.00pm; buildings close at 16.00 with last shuttle bus at 16.25.

If we can't run the Prince Consort Engine for any reason or there are any changes to the day, we will do our best to let you know in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Is Crossness wheelchair accessible?

Most of the site is on one level and accessible with mobility aids. The only exception is the Beam Engine floor in the Engine House which is reached by narrow, pierced iron stairs - we have installed a tv camera here which is linked to a TV screen on the ground floor.

Do I have to wear any safety gear?

You will need to wear a hard hat to enter the Engine House [where the beam engines are located] - these are provided for you and have been cleaned/sanitised between uses. We also recommend you wear flat shoes.

Can I bring my dog with me?

Dogs are welcome at Crossness - they will need be kept on a lead and whilst no public area is out of bounds for them,we advise against taking them upstairs in the Engine House as there is a pierced iron floor which can be very uncomfortable for their paws.

Do you have concessionary tickets for carers?

Carers can accompany a ticket holder free of charge. Just email the ticket details with the carer's name to info@crossness.org.uk and Reception will be advised.
