Description

The challenge

In partnership with CCG-NHS Clinical Commisioners, STEAMlabs invite you to tackle the challenge around access to healthcare. We will be addressing the difficulties encountered by people in accessing and actively continuing with rehabilitation services relating to respiratory conditions.

The issues

At the STEAMlabs Healthcare Hack, we’ll be discussing the issue of patients’ not accessing and continuing rehabilitation services and programmes for respiratory conditions as much as they should. This often leads to the patient’s condition worsening leading to a greater likelihood of admission to hospital, with a typical stay in hospital of 5-7 days if (re)admitted. This often leads to further complications alongside a worsened health and wellbeing prognosis after leaving hospital.

There are a variety of perceived causes for this, but they fall into two key categories:

COMMUNICATION: People do not fully understand the rehabilitation service they are prescribed

ACCESS: People do not find it easy to access the services they are prescribed

Both of these problems present barriers to patients accessing the services as they should.

This challenge has parallels with access to other health rehabilitation services - whilst the specific task for this challenge is to tackle this area of respiratory condition rehabilitation, there may be scale-out options: solutions that work for this area may well have applications in other areas of health.

This hack-style event will focus on increasing efficiency for the health sector and breaking down barriers for healthcare – with a focus on respiratory (breathing) issues.
