Event description

Description

Think maths is important but not sure how you could promote it? Do you want to help inspire school students but not sure where to start?

The Operational Research Society and STEM Sussex are pleased to offer training in Brighton on Thursday 2nd November for anyone interested in running workshops to enthuse children in maths, in schools, colleges or universities. No prior experience is necessary - just enthusiasm to show young people how important maths is!

Who we are:

  • The Operational Research Society offer training to volunteers to deliver fun activities in school that show how maths can be used in the 'real world' - the application of mathematical methods to tackle the real-life problems associated with decision-making in businesses and other enterprises that you are probably very familiar with!
  • The STEM Ambassadors programme is a nationwide scheme with around 33,000 members, people from all walks of life who volunteer a little time to help inspire young people in Science, Tech, Engineering and Mathematics.

This training session will include:

  • (If needed) - an introduction to the STEM Ambassadors programme including an overview of how it works, how you can get involved, and important guidance on safeguarding young people. We will also complete identification checks needed for a Disclosure and Barring Service check (previously a 'CRB'), needed for work with young people.
  • ORS Volunteers training - including a brief overview of ORS, training to run fun activities (lego, board games, or something else fun!) and of course the chance to network with others. We promise it will be lots of fun, and will equip you with the skills you need to run these workshops.

Who can attend?

Anyone!

If you are not currently a registered STEM Ambassador, you are encouraged to attend the whole session and join the scheme, as it incorporates a free DBS check and insurance needed for work in schools, as well as our support to make links with schools. As a STEM Ambassador you are asked only to take part in one voluntary activity a year! If you are not currently a STEM Ambassador , please ensure you have registered before attendance and then follow the instructions given to start a DBS application.

If you are already a registered, DBS checked and 'approved' STEM Ambassador, please join us just before 4pm for the ORS training!

Directions/Parking

The training will be held in the Watts building , room 501. A map of the Moulsecoomb site and buildings can be found here.

Parking at the University is extremely limited during the day and you are advised to take public transport where possible (we are located next to Moulsecoomb train station and on many bus routes). We may be able to secure some parking for attendees and will advise closer to the event if this is possible, however please be aware you may need to make other arrangements (on-street or local car park). The university operates a permit only policy, 7am-3.30pm Mon-Fri. Cars parked without a permit during these times may be issued a penalty notice and STEM Sussex can accept no responsibility for this.

What to Bring

Please bring with you the ID needed to complete your DBS check. This is usually a passport or UK driving license AND two other items such as a bill and a bank statement, at least one of which must show your current address. If you have any queries please email ambassadors@brighton.ac.uk or tel 01273 644178.
