About this Event

The STEM Ambassadors in Scotland Hub is delighted to invite you to this event to learn how to introduce the concept of Operational Research to young people using Lego. This event is suitable for STEM Ambassadors and Secondary Maths Practitioners.

Operational Research (OR) is the science and art of using Maths to solve problems and improve decision making. It’s ‘Maths in the real world’, with applications from government, retail and sports to healthcare, finance and event planning. This session, led by Eve Hardy, Education Manager at The Operational Research Society, features a quick introduction to OR followed by an interactive demonstration of the popular Lego Furniture Factory workshop, a fun, hands-on explanation of how OR and Maths are used in real life. You will also learn where to find free OR teaching and volunteering resources and support.

If you have some Lego available, Eve will be using:

6 rectangular/2x4 Lego bricks

8 square/2x2 Lego bricks

We will send a worksheet in advance so you can prepare for the session but if you are unable to print this to work with then pen and paper will be fine.

There will be the opportunity for STEM Ambassadors and Teachers to meet and network during the event.

This event will take place over Zoom - note that you do not need a zoom account to participate. We will send you the link 48 hours before the event starts.
