STEM Career Talk – Cutting edge biomedical science (Y10-Y12)

Prof Sara Rankin, National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College London

Imperial College London Outreach are holding a STEM carer talk for Y10-Y12 students on Monday 9th July.

This is an opportunity for students to visit our South Kensington campus and attend a lecture-style talk about what a career in science can look like. Prof Sara Rankin, from the College’s National Heart and Lung Institute, will provide an insight into her career in biomedical science and share some of her cutting edge research into stem cells and tissue engineering. Perfect for inspiring students to consider science and/or higher education.

About the speaker:

Prof Rankin did A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Maths and then went on to study Pharmacology at University. This gave her an in depth understanding of how the body work, what causes disease and how drugs work. She then went on to work as a research scientist in Universities. She is currently interested in adult stem cells and is studying how drugs can stimulate them to promote the repair of diseased or damaged organs. Additionally she is working on a project, funded by the Royal British Legion, investigating the role of adult stem cells in the bodies’ response to blast injuries caused by IEDs like landmines.

Target audience: Y10-Y12

Duration: 1 hour (with questions)

If you wish, following the lecture you are welcome to visit campus using our Walking tour guide [PDF] and explore campus by yourself. Please note that this does not allow you access to all areas of campus, as some buildings require swipe card access.
