STEM LECTURE: What is nature worth?
Thu 9 February 2017, 15:15 – 16:15 GMT
Many people enjoy spending time with nature, birdwatching, bug hunting or just taking a walk. But nature does more than give us pleasure (though that is very important). Plants churn out the oxygen we breathe and provide us with food; insects pollinate our crops; microbes recycle nutrients. In recent years scientists have teamed up with economists to figure out the value of nature to people and the results are staggering. Dr Wheeler will introduce you to the ways that nature is being valued, discuss some of the pitfalls with doing this and show you how you can begin to understand the value of nature starting on your street.
Speaker: Dr Philip Wheeler, The Open University
