Chat with 70+ inspiring women working in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths. Watch them play roller derby. Try out some 'sock' derby

About this Event

Are you aged 11 - 19 and female*?

Do you want to feel empowered by 70+ inspiring women representing over 30 STEM industries?

Do you want to watch the fastest growing female sport in Europe - roller derby?

Do you want to try out low contact 'sock' derby and see what you can do when you are 18? If you are 18, you can play roller derby right now!

STEM

50 female STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) professionals are coming from all over the UK to meet you!

They are passionate about their jobs and passionate about their sport. Learn why!

What will you do?

1. Speed network with women working in STEM and learn about their careers and why they are passionate about their jobs.

2. Try out 'sock' derby. This is a low contact, safer version of roller derby (which is high contact and can be quite dangerous). Learn the basics of this unique game.

3. Watch women play and officiate a game of roller derby. Everyone involved is a woman working in STEM.

4. Meet around 20 more employers in a career fair. Small numbers of students mean you will have time to have proper conversations with local STEM employers. Parents / teachers are more than welcome.

5. After you can stay until about 16.10 to watch a second fun game (because playing one game is never enough!). This will be a full length game of 30 minutes a side. The first game is 20 minutes a side.

What did students think last year?

  • 89% said it increased their interest in STEM
  • 100% of girls found it good or excellent

Girls were asked to give three words to describe the event - the ones nearly everyone said were:

  • Cool / fun / exciting
  • Insightful
  • Empowering

A mum said: 'my daughter had a fantastic time at the event despite her nervousness about attending alone. The people that she met were inspirational and she loved watching the roller derby live. She came home enthusiastic about pursuing a career in engineering and has spoken highly about the event.'

What is this Roller Derby?

Roller Derby(video) is the fastest growing women's sport in the world! It is full contact on quad skates! It is very physical but also super tactical! Imagine playing chess on roller skates with people throwing bricks at you!

Roller Derby empowers women to take their space on track and in life / work. It teaches you: you can fall down and get back up again; you can be hit and you can resist.

4 of our players have represented their countries in the Roller Derby World Cup - some several times (Ireland (pic below), England (pic below), West Indies and Iran), some of our officials have worked at the highest level announcing the European Cup final amongst many achievements.

Parents Welcome!

Parents are very welcome for some or all of the event. If however, you want to go for a quick swim or go to the gym, Wycombe Leisure Centre are kindly donating one free pass for every set of tickets booked. A link to receive your pass will be provided with your booking confirmation.

The Small Print

  • *Roller derby is proud to be a fully trans inclusive sport with a comprehensive gender policy. Trans women are women. Non-binary students are welcome. No one is left behind.
  • Teacher(s) with groups are very welcome.
  • Parents / carers are welcome but you can also drop off and collect.
  • Please note that filming and photography will be taking place.
  • 'Sock derby' is super low contact and generally really safe. Students taking part however do so at their own risk. STEMroller reserve the right to not allow a student to take part if their clothing or behaviour will put them or others at risk.
  • During short breaks, students if they wish to eat food will need to leave the sports hall, this will be unsupervised. Eating within the sports hall is not allowed.
