STEM

46 female STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) professionals are excited to meet female students to help inspire them to understand the range of industries and roles where STEM is key.

Women come a wide range of industries including: defence, food, automotive, construction, scientific research, academia, education, leisure, electronic engineering amongst many more. We have Blend Technicians, Helicopter Engineers, Video Game Programmers, Lighting Engineers, Automated Vehicle Developers, Software Engineers, Analytical Biologists, Computational Biologists, a Palaeontologist and even Astrophysics. These are just a sample of the amazing women attending.

But what is this Roller Derby business?

Roller Derby(video) is the fastest growing women's sport in the world! It is full contact on quad skates! It is very physical but also super tactical! Imagine playing chess on roller skates with people throwing bricks at you!

Roller Derby empowers women to take their space on track and in life / work. It teaches you, you can fall down and get back up again. You can be hit and you can resist.

Many of women attending have played or officiated at very high levels up to the Roller Derby World Cup. It is rare to get such a high calibre of players together at the one time when not in formal competition.

Everyone playing and officiating is a woman working in STEM.

But why?

Research clearly indicates that when girls experience STEM women doing something amazing, they are far more likely to be inspired by them.

By watching a game (scrim) first and seeing how these women of all shapes and sizes are strong, brave and resilient, girls are more likely to listen to these women and take what they say seriously. Following the scrim, girls will speed networking with up to 20 of these women giving them the chance to ask them about their careers and pathways into them.

Are you ready to be awed and inspired? Are you a female student in Key Stage 4 / 5 (14 - 19)? Come on, get a ticket, join us!

Teacher with groups are very welcome. Parents / carers are welcome but you can also drop off and collect.

Please note that filming and photography will be taking place.
