Event description
A fun and experimental approach to screen print for any experience level.

About this Event

You will use paper stencil methods to print multi-layered prints, experimenting with transparent inks to produce unexpected new tones.

The basics of how to screen print onto paper will be covered, as well as mixing transparent vs. opaque inks, registration and composition. Rather than working with a single image and exposing a screen, stencil methods involve making one design or another with a fresh screen, allowing you to work quickly and make a handful of layers throughout the day.

What experience do I need?

This course is suitable for absolute beginners, since we will cover the basics of how to screen print well. However, people who already have screen print in their practice but would enjoy a new approach will also benefit. Stencil screen print can be a great way to bring experimentation and freedom to your practice.

What will I make?

Throughout the day you will produce 10-20 multi-layered, multi-coloured screen prints onto A3 paper to take away with you.

Who is my tutor?

Susie Rumsby is a Printmaking Instructor at Leeds Arts University, where she introduces students to screen print, etching, linocut, monoprint and bookbinding. Before coming to teach art in Leeds, Susie studied printmaking in Portland, Oregon, where she also worked as a master printer’s apprentice, an artists’ assistant, and at Portland Art Museum helping to put on shows of prints and drawings. Susie is a founding committee member of Leeds Print Workshop, and believes in making the fun of printmaking open to as many people as possible.

Do I need to bring anything?

All materials and equipment will be provided, including the screens, inks and good quality cartridge paper.

You might want to bring some sketchbooks, ideas and source materials for your prints; however, you will also be just fine if you show up on the day with a blank slate and work in an experimental and abstract way. It would be useful to bring a portfolio folder to take your prints home - these are available to buy at the workshop.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will issue a refund if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the course, after which no refunds will be issued. Please note Eventbrite’s booking fee is non-refundable.

By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website here.

What if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible but, due to the nature of the building, Leeds Print Workshop is not wheelchair accessible. There is a step up into the building and four steps down to the toilets, and no accessible toilet facilities. Should you have any questions, or wish to discuss accessibility before booking, please don't hesitate to email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
