Event description

Description

Everyone is welcome to join us for this special collaborative event between the Queen Mary Postcolonial Seminar and the Postgraduate Research Seminar in the Department of English. We are thrilled to be joined by Professor Stephanie Newell (Yale/Newcastle), who will be speaking on:

"Dirty" Films in Colonial West Africa: Audience Responses to Health Propaganda Movies, 1930s-1950s

This talk will highlight the complexity of African audience responses to the simple ideological formula of colonial health and hygiene films. Why did Nigerian audiences break into uncontrollable laughter at the sight of a dead baby in one movie? Can one find non-Eurocentric methods for approaching texts and archives that are saturated with British colonial constructions of local populations?

Stephanie Newell is Professor of English and Senior Research Fellow in International and Area Studies at Yale University. She is Leverhulme Visiting Professor at Newcastle University (2019-20) and Professor Extraordinaire at the University of Stellenbosch (2018-2020). Her books include: The Forger’s Tale: The Search for “Odeziaku” (2006), The Power to Name: A History of Anonymity in Colonial West Africa (2013), and Histories of Dirt: Media and Urban Life in Colonial and Postcolonial Lagos (forthcoming).

The seminar begins at 18:00 and will be followed by refreshments.

It takes place in the ArtsOne Lecture Theatre in the ArtsOne Building, which is on the QMUL Mile End campus (close to Mile End and Stepney Green tube stations).

There is step-free access to the ArtsOne Lecture Theatre, and more accessibility information can be found here. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have further questions about accessibility.

We look forward to seeing you there!
