Professor Huw Williams – Psychology at the University of Exeter

To achieve peak performance, especially under the pressures of a tournament setting, players need to prepare and recover effectively physically and mentally. Sport science research at the University of Exeter is informing evidence-based strategies to reduce injury risk, perform optimally when under extreme pressure and provide the right nutrition and nutraceuticals to speed recovery and sustain performance.

One such injury risk is concussion; a common sporting injury which often goes unnoticed with the effects not being fully understood. Many make a full recovery but some experience problems, especially if they have not recovered from a previous injury. Professor Huw Williams explains why understanding the effects of concussion and having a plan to recover and then return to play is so important.

Biography

Professor Joanna Bowtell

Professor Bowtell is a Professor of Exercise Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism and Head of the Sport and Health Sciences Department at the University of Exeter. Her research interests are focused on how nutrition can improve exercise performance and support healthy ageing.

Dr Bert Bond

Dr Bond is a Lecturer at the University of Exeter, with specific research interests into how exposure to various lifestyle-related stimuli (poor health, inactivity, different types of exercise and sport-related head impacts) influence blood vessel function.

Professor Huw Williams

Professor Williams is an Associate Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology and Co-Director of the Centre for Clinical Neuropsychology Research (CCNR) at the University of Exeter. His research interests lie in a range of areas in Clinical Neuropsychology, particularly on neuro-rehabilitation and recently regarding crime. He was recently presented with the Barbara Wilson Award for Lifetime Achievement in Clinical Neuropsychology and a Fellowship of The British Psychological Society.
