Description

Stilettos Network would like to invite you to join us for good food, good company and a glass or two over our current read.

As chosen by our December Book Group, "I Let You Go by Claire Mackintosh"

"At the scene of a tragic accident, life changes immediately for everyone involved. Finding it impossible to stay in Bristol, Jenna Gray moves to a remote cottage on the Welsh coast. She is desperate to escape the past, but is haunted by the accident, by the loss of her son, and by her own fears. DI Ray Stevens is determined to get to the bottom of this case. The investigation takes him away from his family and he finds himself growing closer to Kate Evans, a young and forthright detective on his team. But Jenna's past is about to catch up with her, with devastating consequences."

A bit about Claire Mackintosh by Richard Madeley:

"Clare Mackintosh was until recently a serving police inspector, which explains her familiarity with the procedural aspect of this excellent psychological thriller.

Mackintosh loved her job but was champing at the bit to write fiction. So she struggled to freelance for magazines, alongside her 50-hour week with the police, and looking after her three children, before finally taking a two-year career break.

It paid off. I Let You Go is a real page-turner. Mackintosh was inspired to write it by a horrific hit-and-run incident in her own city, in which a nine-year-old boy was killed by a joyrider. Despite an extensive police investigation, the offender was never charged. Mackintosh couldn’t get this case out of her mind, and asked herself not only how the boy’s mother could survive the loss of her son, but also – crucially – how could someone live with the knowledge they had killed a child.

So those two questions informed I Let You Go, the novel Mackintosh wrote when she realised she needed to write a book which drew on the intense and dark emotions she had witnessed in her work.

As if in answer to her question of how a mother can survive the loss of her child, Mackintosh subsequently had to endure the death of her own new-born son to meningitis. It was this that taught her that however devastating grief is, something made her want to carry on.

Mackintosh says that after her own loss, she suddenly knew what motivated her central character Jenna to run away and escape the past.

This is a powerful and mesmerising debut novel"

If you've never been to Book Club, or don't seem to find the time to read, Stilettos Book Club's are perfect for you. It's very relaxed and everyone is welcome (yes - men too!), even if they haven't quite managed to read the book. We try to keep group numbers small, and we welcome someone new at every meeting, so no need to be nervous. Here is the lowdown...

What is Book Club?

We are all given 4-6 weeks to read the same book. We then all come together to share our thoughts. You just have to register your attendance via the Eventbrite website and come along on the day. If you like, you can have a full three course meal, or just a bowl of soup or a coffee! Really, its whatever you fancy.

Why?

Reading is great exercise for the mind, and although we are all mega busy, reading a book forces us to take time out for ourselves. It's also a great chance to meet new people and make new friends.

Which book?

There is much head-scratching which goes into choosing the book, however, our experience of Book Club is that the books that have been enjoyed the most are the ones chosen by the group.
