Description

Stilettos Network would like to invite you to join us for good food, good company and a glass or two over our current read.

As chosen by our August Book Group, "Circe by Madeline Miller"

"Circe (/ˈsɜːrsi/; Greek: Κίρκη Kírkē pronounced [kírkɛː]) is a goddess of magic or sometimes a nymph, enchantress or sorceress in Greek mythology. She is a daughter of the god Helios and either the Oceanid nymph Perse or the goddess Hecate. Circe was renowned for her vast knowledge of potions and herbs."

The daughter of a sea nymph and the Titan sun god Helios, Circe begins her life in the halls of her father. When she was born, she tells us, “the name for what I was did not exist”. Is she a nymph? A goddess? The truth, as it turns out, is something entirely new. Despised by her divine family, Circe discovers her powers of sorcery when she turns a human fisherman into a god. When he spurns her for another nymph, Scylla, Circe transforms her rival into a horrific sea monster who becomes the sourge of all sailors – an act that will haunt Circe for the rest of her life. Circe is exiled to a lonely island, where she spends centuries honing her craft.

"The guiding instinct here is to re-present the classics from the perspective of the women involved in them. An exiled witch takes centre stage in the Orange prize-winner’s powerful retelling of Homer’s the Odyssey." Alex Preston, The Guardian

We are all given 4-6 weeks to read the same book. We then all come together to share our thoughts. You just have to register your attendance via the Eventbrite website and come along on the day. If you like, you can have a full three course meal, or just a bowl of soup or a coffee! Really, its whatever you fancy.

Why?

Reading is great exercise for the mind, and although we are all mega busy, reading a book forces us to take time out for ourselves. It's also a great chance to meet new people and make new friends.

Which book?

There is much head-scratching which goes into choosing the book, however, our experience of Book Club is that the books that have been enjoyed the most are the ones chosen by the group.
