Description

Stilettos Network would like to invite you to join us for an afternoon of good company, good coffee and a piece of cake whilst we discuss our current read.

For our first Book Club to be held in Worcester, one of our members has set the ball rolling by choosing our first book "How to Stop Time, by Matt Haig".

"You see, I have a condition,” Tom Hazard, the narrator of this engaging novel, confesses on page one. He is quasi-immortal. “I am old – old in the way that a tree, or a quahog clam, or a Renaissance painting is old. I was born well over four hundred years ago, on the third of March 1581 …” For every 13 or 14 human years, he ages one year. But far from bringing him godlike pleasure, his condition places him at a mournful distance from the rest of humanity, doomed to see everyone he loves age and die. If you enjoyed The Time Travellers Wife, you will love this..." The Guardian

"The first rule is that you don't fall in love, ' he said... 'There are other rules too, but that is the main one. No falling in love. No staying in love. No daydreaming of love. If you stick to this you will just about be okay.'" A love story across the ages - and for the ages - about a man lost in time, the woman who could save him, and the lifetimes it can take to learn how to live Tom Hazard has a dangerous secret. He may look like an ordinary 41-year-old, but owing to a rare condition, he's been alive for centuries. Tom has lived history--performing with Shakespeare, exploring the high seas with Captain Cook, and sharing cocktails with Fitzgerald. Now, he just wants an ordinary life. So Tom moves back his to London, his old home, to become a high school history teacher--the perfect job for someone who has witnessed the city's history first hand. Better yet, a captivating French teacher at his school seems fascinated by him. But the Albatross Society, the secretive group which protects people like Tom, has one rule: Never fall in love. As painful memories of his past and the erratic behavior of the Society's watchful leader threaten to derail his new life and romance, the one thing he can't have just happens to be the one thing that might save him. Tom will have to decide once and for all whether to remain stuck in the past, or finally begin living in the present. How to Stop Time is a bighearted, wildly original novel about losing and finding yourself, the inevitability of change, and how with enough time to learn, we just might find happiness."

If you've never been to Book Club, or don't seem to find the time to read, Stilettos Book Club's are perfect for you. It's very relaxed and everyone is welcome (yes - men too!), even if they haven't quite managed to read the book. We try to keep group numbers small, and we welcome someone new at every meeting, so no need to be nervous. Here is the lowdown...

What is Book Club?

We are all given 4-6 weeks to read the same book. We then all come together to share our thoughts. You just have to register your attendance via the Eventbrite website and come along on the day. Gemma at the Commandery will be on hand to supply endless cups of tea and a piece of cake if you desire.

Why?

Reading is great exercise for the mind, and although we are all mega busy, reading a book forces us to take time out for ourselves. It's also a great chance to meet new people and make new friends.

Which book?

There is much head-scratching which goes into choosing the book, however, our experience of Book Club is that the books that have been enjoyed the most are the ones chosen by the group, and this is what will happen going forward.
