Description

Stilettos Network would like to invite you to join us for an afternoon of good company, good coffee and a piece of cake whilst we discuss our current read.

For our next Book Club to be held in Worcester, our group decided on "The Girls by Emma Cline".

The Girls is a 2016 debut novel by American author Emma Cline. It is loosely inspired by the Manson Family and the murder of actress Sharon Tate.

Lured by sexual desire and the prospect of female friendship, Evie Boyd, an unhappy 14-year-old, spends a large chunk of her summer colluding with a cult. Some 40 years in the future, an unexpected encounter causes Evie to reflect on that experience at length.

As the story begins, middle-aged Evie is between jobs and temporarily living at a friend’s beach house. One night, in bed, she hears voices and understands there’s been a break-in. She’s convinced she’s about to be murdered. When death doesn’t come, she works up her nerve and gets out of bed to investigate. The “intruders” are just her friend’s college-age son Julian and his girlfriend Sasha, who’s younger, maybe 16 years old. They’re stopping through on their way to another town…

"The Girls is far from a perfect novel: its mirroring of the trajectory of the Family’s activities is somewhat constricting, and unnecessary; a secondary line, in which we meet Evie in middle age, is affecting, but not quite substantial enough. But she is a powerful interpreter of ambiguous emotional vectors, and the catastrophic directions in which they can lead." Alex Clarke, The Guardian

If you've never been to Book Club, or don't seem to find the time to read, Stilettos Book Club's are perfect for you. It's very relaxed and everyone is welcome (yes - men too!), even if they haven't quite managed to read the book. We try to keep group numbers small, and we welcome someone new at every meeting, so no need to be nervous. Here is the lowdown..."

What is Book Club?

We are all given 4-6 weeks to read the same book. We then all come together to share our thoughts. You just have to register your attendance via the Eventbrite website and come along on the day - look out for us in the purple t-shirts. Lena and the team at Boston Tea Party will be on hand to supply endless cups of tea or brunch if you desire.

Why?

Reading is great exercise for the mind, and although we are all mega busy, reading a book forces us to take time out for ourselves. It's also a great chance to meet new people and make new friends.

Which book?

There is much head-scratching which goes into choosing the book, however, our experience of Book Club is that the books that have been enjoyed the most are the ones chosen by the group, and this is what will happen going forward.
