STILL LIFE IN FELT TIP PENS: LAYERING COLOUR
Online Live Class: WEDNESDAY 3rd September
+14 DAYS RECORDING ACCESS
Taught by Jade Anthony
Led by Jade Anthony and hosted by Luisa-Maria Maccormack, this class will be a joyful exploration of the underrated medium of felt tip pens. Together we will construct small, simple still lifes to draw from, using the bold colours and layering capacity of felt tips to discover the basics of colour theory while creating vibrant and playful compositions that celebrate pattern, colour, and shape.
Taking inspiration from the work of contemporary artist Anna Valdez and the layered aesthetics of risograph printmaking, we will experiment with colour blending, transparency, and overlapping forms to achieve striking and unexpected effects in this simple, accessible medium.
First invented in Japan in 1962 by Yukio Horie of the Tokyo Stationery Company, felt tip pens quickly became popular worldwide for their ease of use and vibrant colours. Today, they are used in everything from children’s drawings to architectural renderings, fashion illustration, and fine art. Their versatility lies in their ability to produce both delicate lines and bold, saturated areas of colour, making them a playful yet powerful tool for artists at every level.
And of course—we all have an old collection of felt tip pens malingering in our art boxes and studios; this class is an opportunity to dust them off and celebrate them for the versatile, joyful tools that they can be!
This class is designed for all levels and will encourage students to approach still life drawing with curiosity, energy, and a spirit of play.

ABOUT OUR TUTOR
Jade Anthony is a London based artist working across painting, printmaking, drawing and installation. She studied fine art at Winchester School of art before studying at the Royal drawing School in 2022. Her work has been featured in RAID Magazine and Woolwich Print Fair, and in 2024 she was feautured in SHOWSTUDIO's paris fahion week coverage. Anthony's work spans a wide range of mediums and subjects, drifting between abstraction and representation, flatness and illusiory depth. Anthony intentionally exchews any particular 'style', instead focusing on the unique qualities of each medium, allowing herself to interrogate her own practice constantly. Drawing from historical sources, the natural world, digital culture and personal experiences, Anthony layers her subjects in playful, theatrical compositions often featuring Trompe l'oeil elements and a blend of techniques.
