Event description

Description

Over two weekends you will explore composition, scale, colour, contrast, texture, placement, simple piecing, layering and hand quilting of ‘found’ cloth . Develop a series of experimental one off pieces or a small quilt or wall-hanging and be inspired by a wide range of textile artists such as Louise Bourgeois, The Gees Bend quilters, Celia Pym and the ancient art of Japanese ‘Boro’.

The course aims to encourage playfulness and an experimental approach to making. It is suitable for beginners with an interest in textiles, continuing students who want to work on a bigger scale and develop their ideas further, and those with more experience.

It is part of an ongoing Stitched Textiles course at phoenix Brighton but can be taken on its own.

Most materials and equipment will be provided. Students will need to bring: fabric scissors; minimum of 2 x old garments to unpick and repurpose, salvaged fabrics, charity shop finds or fabric scraps; old sheets, blankets or thick fabrics to be used for wadding (these could be sourced from home or a second hand/charity shop); any other sewing materials, threads or equipment you would especially like to use.

Costs: £160
Days: 2 weekends
Times: 10:30 - 16:30
Dates: 15, 16, 22, 23 June
Room: Red
Maximum: 10

Deborah studied Illustration at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and went on to work as a designer. In 2004 she qualified as a teacher and taught graphic communication for ten years. In 2016 she gained an MA in Textiles from Chelsea College of Art. She works from her studio in Sussex where she makes textiles, collages, prints and drawings. Whether working with paper or textiles she enjoys the interplay of colour, shape and the spaces in-between. Her work reflects her interest in the cross over between art, craft and design. She teaches courses and workshops in Sussex and beyond.
