Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know anything about Stoicism to attend?

Not at all. This course is designed to be accessible and engaging for everyone — whether you’re completely new to philosophy or have some prior experience. You’ll be gently guided through key Stoic ideas, with plenty of time for reflection and discussion.

Do I need to read anything in advance?

We ask that participants read Seneca’s short essay On the Tranquility of the Mind before the day. It’s widely available online and in print. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every detail — we’ll explore the main themes together in a relaxed, supportive way.

What can I expect from the day?

The day will combine short talks, Socratic-style discussions, guided meditations, reflective writing, and small group work. It’s designed to be both contemplative and practical — helping you engage deeply with the material and apply it to your life.

Is this a mindfulness course or a philosophy course?

Both — and neither in the conventional sense. The course blends ancient philosophical insight with modern reflective practices. You won’t be learning doctrine, but exploring what it means to live wisely, with emotional steadiness, in the face of life’s challenges.

What should I bring?

Please bring a notebook or journal, something to write with, and a copy of On the Tranquility of the Mind if you have one. Comfortable clothing is also recommended, as some sessions will include short periods of seated meditation.

Is the venue accessible?

The Morrab Library is housed in a beautiful historic building. Please note that while the ground floor is accessible, some upper rooms (if used) may have limited access for those with mobility needs. Feel free to contact the library in advance to discuss any access concerns.

Is lunch provided?

Lunch is not provided, but there are several excellent cafés and delis nearby in Penzance. You’re also welcome to bring your own and eat in the tranquil surroundings of Morrab Gardens, just outside the library. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be provided during the morning and afternoon breaks.

What is the atmosphere like?

The course is designed to be warm, welcoming, and gently paced. You’ll be encouraged to reflect, share (if you wish), and listen deeply — in a spirit of curiosity, not judgment. The beautiful surroundings of the Morrab Library offer the perfect backdrop for thoughtful conversation and stillness.
