About this event

Community • Historic

Some areas of London seem to be veritable hot spots for ghostly encounters. This walk explores one such place – the heart of Stoke Newington – to consider how the past seems to continue into the present in ways we are yet to understand.

Many of the experiences I describe happened quite recently but seem to relate to people who lived, worked and died in the area in the past, during the period when Stokey was a small rural village (16th to18th centuries), through to its transformation into an innner city suburb (19th and early 20th centuries). We will explore uncanny events in the context of the history of the local area as well as reflect on which theories of the paranormal might best fit each case.

The walk takes 2 hours. Please arrive five minutes early as I will be setting off on time. We will meander slowly from our meeting place outside the Fire Station on Stoke Newington Church Street, ending at the Medieval St Mary's Old Churchyard.

I walk in (almost) all weathers, so please come prepared! The terrain is mostly flat, with a few uneven and dark surfaces, and one busy road to cross. Recommended age: 15+.

Meet me in front of the Fire Station on Stoke Newington Church Street (between Fleetwood Street and Abney Park Cemetery, see map and pic below).

For information about my other North London ghost walks, please visit: www.storiesofourstreets.com/walks. My Newington Green Ghost Walk takes in the area to the south of Stoke Newington and surrounds. I also have walks around the Angel Islington and lower Holloway/Barnsbury, and a new walk taking in the squares and institutions of Bloomsbury. I look forward to walking with you on my serious ghost walks - for the seriously curious!
