THEME: Recovery

Some prompts to inspire your contributions:

Rest, renewal, healing. Rehabilitation, redemption. Twelve Steps, one step at a time. Bouncing back. Regaining lost ground. Reclamation, regeneration. A new leaf, a turn for the better. Darkest before the dawn. This too shall pass.

Our special guest for the late show will be Cameron McNeish.

He is an award-winning writer and television presenter whose fields of interest include mountaineering, hill-walking, backpacking, cycle touring, mountain biking and Scots and Irish traditional music. He is also an avid campervan man!

For twenty years Cameron was editor of The Great Outdoors magazine and he now edits Scottish Walks and Scottish Cycling. He also writes a monthly column in the Scots Magazine. He has written over 20 books on outdoor matters and is recognised as one of the UK's leading commentators on outdoor affairs.

Cameron is an experienced television and radio presenter whose successes include The Edge: 100 Years of Scottish Mountaineering; two series of Wilderness Walks; and The Adventure Show. He is a vice-President of Ramblers Scotland and Patron of Scottish Orienteering and Mountain Aid.

In 2010 Cameron was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from PPA (Professional Publishers Association) Scotland for his services to magazine publishing and in 2015 he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Adventure Awards. In 2016 Cameron was presented with the Oliver Brown Award by the Scots Independent newspaper for his work in showcasing Scotland. In February 2018 Cameron was given the Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture, and was entered into the Hall of Fame at the Fort William Mountain Festival. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and lives in the Scottish Highlands in the shadow of the Cairngorms.

Cameron is also a great Sessions friend who has told stories and sung for us many times!

Programme

Our evening always begins with half an hour or so featuring our special guest, and then we open the floor! BUT, because our programme gets filled up very quickly, performance slots need to be booked in advance. Read on...

We welcome:

  • folk who just want to come along and listen. You don't have to perform to be taking part and thunderous applause is always appreciated!
  • all kinds of stories: historical, myth and legend, your own experiences - or a mix!
  • poetry: ideally your own, but your faves from other poets are welcome, too
  • music: traditional, contemporary, original or borrowed; instrumental or sung; solo or ensemble

Anything on theme will do, UP TO FIVE MINUTES. (We welcome very broad interpretation of theme, but not of time...)

Performers can have a free ticket. Please email us FIRST to find out if there's space in the programme. If so, we'll put your name on the door. If not, you can always buy an audience ticket for this one and reserve a performance spot for a future Session.

SO, if you want to share, please email us ASAP saying:

  • - Early Show (6pm) or Late Show (8pm)
  • - what you'd like to do
  • - what it's called
  • - who it's by
  • - what pace or mood it is
  • - if you have any technical or access needs
  • - a bit about you so we can introduce you. Full name, where you're from, anything else!

And remember, it's a maximum of 5 minutes per performer, including your chat at the start. (We have a shepherd's crook...)

Musical items: to Hamish at storylandssessions@gmail.com marked 'Music' in the email Subject line.

Spoken items: to Merryn at storylandssessions@gmail.com marked 'Spoken' in the email Subject line.

The evening will be threaded together by your co-hosts, Merryn and Hamish, with tales, tunes and terrible jokes.

And there will be CAKES!

A refreshment break halfway allows time to mingle and enjoy heartening beverages and delicious cakes.
