About this Event

Bowls of Barley, Honey & Wine – An Evening of Myth, Folktale and the Poetry of W.B. Yeats with Martin Shaw

Evening event: 7-9pm

Thirty years ago, the storyteller Martin Shaw was hurled into the world of Irish myth and poetry by the work of W.B. Yeats. He is grateful to say he has never recovered. Join us for an evening celebrating stories of Diamuid, Ossian, Grainne and even Fionn mac Cumhaill himself. Woven between these electrifying tales will be readings from both the poetry and prose of Yeats. This will be an unforgettable night for those with a love of story, poetry and place.

Suitable for ages:12+

Tickets: €15, 7-9pm

The Storyteller and the Shaman – A workshop with Martin Shaw

Daytime workshop: 1-4pm (followed by bowl of broth)

A workshop that looks at the ancient relationship of magical language to story. By exploring fairy tales and poetic speech we bear witness to how myth can create communicable relatedness between a teller, a landscape, and the mood of the times. You will leave with at least one story to tell, and a deep reservoir of approaches to both honour and comprehend the power of ancient stories and how they rub up against the very architecture of modern life. Why do we still need storytellers? Where, secreted within the role, is the old relationship to magic? This is a workshop accessible for anyone with a wider love of myth, land, poetics, not storytellers exclusively.

Suitable for adults

Tickets: €35, 1-4pm, followed by bowl of broth

Martin Shaw is a leading teacher of myth, and is one of Britain’s best-loved storytellers. Robert Bly describes him as “a true master”, and Rosie Boycott as “a web of wild intelligence”. Author of the Mythteller trilogy, he teaches courses at Stanford University and is director of studies at the Westcountry School of Myth in Devon, England. His new book The Night Wages, (Cista Mystica, 2019) is a rumination on the vitality of ancient stories in modern times.
