About this Event

MARA MENZIES: Blood and Gold

Mae’r adroddwraig storïau Albanaidd/Kenyaidd Mara Menzies wedi creu sioe storïa bwerus sy’n defnyddio chwedloniaeth hynafol a naratifau cyfoes i ystyried gwaddol gwladychiaeth a chaethwasiaeth yn yr Alban gyfoes. Mae mam sydd ar ei gwely angau yn rhoi bocs i’w merch, sy’n cynnwys cliwiau ynghylch trysor gwerthfawr. Wedi cwrdd â’r dyn dirgel, y Shadowman, mae’r ferch yn mynd ar siwrnai lle mae’n dysgu am ei gorffennol cyfoethog a chymhleth ac yn cael mewnwelediad i fywydau pobl eraill. Daw i ddechrau deall ei lle unigryw ei hun yn y byd. Mae’n siwrnai sy’n llawn galar, hiwmor, trasiedi, poen, llawenydd, dewrder ac sy’n dathlu ysbryd y ddynol ryw.

‘Glittering, beautiful, disturbing’ ** (The Scotsman)

Mae Mara wedi ei gwahodd i berfformio ledled y byd ac i greu storïau’n arbennig ar gyfer y sawl sy’n ddigon dewr i gamu i fydoedd ffantasi.

Ar ôl i sioe Blood and Gold gael ei pherfformio, bydd staff y Ganolfan Adrodd Storïau yn hwyluso sgwrs gyda Mara Menzies am ei gwaith, ei ffynonellau, ei dulliau a’i hamcanion.

MARA MENZIES: Blood and Gold

Award-winning Scottish/Kenyan storyteller Mara Menzies has created a powerful storytelling show that uses ancient mythology and contemporary narratives to explore the legacy of colonialism and slavery in modern day Scotland. A dying mother gives her daughter a box containing clues to a priceless treasure. An encounter with the mysterious Shadowman sets in motion a journey, where the girl learns of her rich and complicated past, where she is given a window into the lives of others, and where she begins to understand her own unique place in the world. A journey filled with grief, humour, tragedy, pain, joy, courage and a celebration of the human spirit.

‘Glittering, beautiful, disturbing’ ** (The Scotsman)

Mara Menzies is one the finest performance storytellers on the global stage. Drawing on her rich, dual Kenyan/Scottish cultural heritage she creates worlds that explore contemporary issues through legend, myth and fantasy. Mara has been invited to perform across the world and to create bespoke stories for those who dare to step into the world of fantasy.

After the performance of Blood and Gold, Storytelling Centre staff will facilitate a conversation with Mara Menzies about her work, her sources, and her goals.
