“ CHILDREN OF THE FIRST GENERATION ” - Storytelling

“Boldly Going where Their Elders Have Never Stepped Before” !

(running time: 60 minutes)

This event is being supported by Miss Culture Jam and the rest of the Wednesday Mic Fever Team, New Style Radio, DJ Fitz and Caribbean Legacy.

“Children of the First Generations” is a short story, written and performed by Victor Richards.

The story explores the experiences of the first generation born in England or those who immigrated here at a young age through music from 50’s – 80’s with a running commentary DJ-styley. This show will recapture the spirit of growing up in England in the Late 60’s and Early 70’s, as seen through my eyes and the experiences of my Peers, Spanning our Childhood, Adolescents and Early Adulthood. Some of these Friendships have passed the test of time others have withered along the way.

The storyline centres around Granville, the son of Augustus Cleveland Johnson the character is Victor's first play “Streets Paved with Gold”. Granville was born in England. After immigrating to Barbados for 15 years he decides to return to England (His country of Birth) with his wife and their two lovely children. It is his desire for the children to complete their education here and the family to acquire and affluent lifestyle. However his wife and children have been uprooted and there is no certainty as to whether they can make the adjustments necessary to settle in England.

After being here for a year Granville decides to throw a house warming party and invites his old friends acquaintances and family members ..... during his preparation for the party he begins to Reminisce .... His Trip Down Memory Lane Encompasses Many Experiences and Encounters.

Recapturing the Music, Fashion, Schoolboy daze and humour, Adolescence, Work, Family, Relationship and the realisation of the impact of racism, just to mention a few of the issues. The story provides a realistic and thrilling account of the experiences faced by the first generation and the legacy which we have inherited as we continue to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions made by our Elders who arrived nearly a century ago....
