About this event

On Saturday, September 20th at 7pm, Celtic Harmony Camp, the Outdoor Prehistory Centre in Brickendon, near Hertford, will host a special Storytelling evening: "The Hanging of a Mouse." Coinciding with the Autumn Equinox, the event offers a unique opportunity to step into a world of ancient myth and magic.

Step into the flickering firelight of the Chieftain Roundhouse for a spellbinding evening of myth, music, and magic, as celebrated storyteller Hugh Lupton, a key figure in the UK’s storytelling revival, brings the ancient Welsh tales of the Mabinogion vividly to life.

Drawn from the First and Third Branches of these legendary medieval stories, Hugh’s performance unravels a haunting and beautiful journey through love, violence, enchantment, and revenge—a world where badgers are carried in bags, the veil between realms is thin, and even a mouse may face the gallows.

With over four decades of experience, Hugh is one of the UK’s most revered storytellers. As a co-founder of the renowned Company of Storytellers, he was instrumental in bringing oral tradition to modern audiences. His performances are rich with rhythm and poetry, echoing the deep magic of the land and its oldest stories.

“Hugh Lupton is a teller of great intensity and subtle power.” – Sing Out Magazine. U.S.

This is storytelling as it was meant to be heard—live, immersive, and unforgettable.

Refreshment are available before the performance or during the interval at The Woodland Bistro.
