Whose stories are told in times of conflict? Whose voices are suppressed? What impact does this have on community resilience? How can policymakers better embed cultural approaches into wider efforts to support community resilience?
British Council, Goethe-Institut and Ukrainian Institute invite you to join their dialogue on the impact of cultural approaches to supporting resilience in times of conflict.
Through sharing research insight and showcasing storytelling and heritage projects, this event will explore how supporting storytelling – from monuments to music, from art to journalism, from films to poetry – can empower the voice, skills and agency of creatives and marginalised people affected by conflict. Yet there continue to be significant gaps between cultural, development and security policy frameworks and programmes supporting conflict-affected communities.
With exacerbating conflicts across the world, there is urgent need to increase support for creative communities, institutions and heritage affected by conflict: to support freedom of creative expression, to safeguard collections and cultural heritage, and to protect and champion cultural diversity in all its forms.
Bringing in perspectives from policymakers, practitioners and researchers, this dialogue will interrogate the longer-term impact that these approaches can play in supporting the resilience of communities affected by conflict, and what more would be possible if siloes between sectors could be dismantled. Drawing on wider dialogue with the audience, our expert panel will then provide recommendations for policymakers and practitioners working in the field.
Doors open at 12:00 h. The event will run from 12:30 h - 14:00 h.
You are then warmly welcome to join us for networking and refreshments between 14:00 h – 15:00 h.
