Description

Storytelling in Performance is a series of performances by leading storytellers in Wales followed by a discussion with the artists. These events are jointly organised by the George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling and Beyond the Border. This year’s series features Robin Williamson in conversation with Prof. Joseph Sobol, Daniel Morden in conversation with Dr Emily Underwood-Lee and Tamar Elenud Williams in conversation with Dr Marta Minier.

Drawing Newly on the Bardic Heritage of Scotland and Ireland, Robin Williamson

Robin Williamson is founder of the Incredible String Band in the 1960’s and of the Merry Band in the 70’s. Robin has been at the forefront of the storytelling revival in Britain and America since the 1980’s. He was the first to focus on the restoration of Celtic Harp to its ancient role as spontaneous accompaniment to spoken word. He continues to tour internationally solo and as a duo with his wife, singer multi -instrumentalist, Bina Williamson.

A most prolific and diverse songwriter ,Robin has made numerous records over his 50 year career, most recently for ECM and Quadrant as well as on his own label Pigs Whisker Music. Twice nominated for a Grammy he is cited as an influence by Paul McCartney, Led Zeppelin and many contemporary acoustic and new folk artists.

The performance will be followed by a post-show discussion between Robin and Prof Joseph Sobol. Joseph Daniel Sobol, Ph.D. is a Professor of Storytelling in the Faculty of Creative Industries. From 2000-2017 he was Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Storytelling at East Tennessee State University. His dissertation on the American storytelling revival was published in 1999 by the University of Illinois Press under the title “The Storytellers’ Journey: An American Revival.” He is a co-founder of the Storytelling in Higher Education Special Interest Group of the National Storytelling Network, and a co-founder and co-editor of the journal Storytelling, Self, Society: an Interdisciplinary Journal of Storytelling Studies.
