Event description

Description

Navigating university hierarchies, committees and politics is often complex and can be frustrating. Whether you are seeking to embed employability activity, lobby for more resource or simply persuade an internal colleague to adopt a new approach, your strategic influencing skills are key to your success. This one day course for senior leaders will help you to understand your political climate better, identify key levers for change, adopt new influencing approaches and critically develop your influencing skills whilst maintaining your professional integrity.

During this practical, small group workshop you will:

  • Develop your personal influencing style and persuasion skills
  • Understand how to flex your communication style for different types of people
  • Explore different influencing and persuasion models
  • Use effective stakeholder mapping models
  • Reflect on how to maintain your professional and personal integrity

The session will be delivered by Rebecca Fielding (Managing Director) & Mike Grey (Head of University Partnerships), Gradconsult

Rebecca has recruited and developed thousands of people for some of the UK’s biggest names (including Aon, the Co-operative Group and Sheffield Hallam University) since 2001. Her most recent corporate roles were as Talent Manager for the UK&I with HJ Heinz and as the Head of Leadership and Culture with Asda. Rebecca was a Director with the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) for six years, sat on the AGCAS board, has won national awards for her work, judged industry awards and sat on several careers advisory bodies. Since establishing Gradconsult in 2012 the business has worked with over 30% of the UK’s Universities, over 300 SMEs and corporate employers across a variety of sectors. Rebecca is also an appointed Associate/Trainer for both AGCAS and AGR.

Quotes from previous participants of Rebecca’s training courses:

"Thought-provoking (in a positive way) and very valuable"

“Whatever Rebecca is on I want some!”

Mike brings his years of experience working within Higher Education, developing industrial partnerships and employability strategy, to consult on a wide range of projects with universities and employers. He is an Associate of ISE (formerly AGR) delivering training focussed on understanding HE and working effectively with careers services. He also delivers training for AGCAS and is a member of the Employer Advisory Board for Henley Business School. He received the Outstanding Contribution Award at the National Undergraduate Employability Awards 2016 and delivered a TEDx talk called 'The Work Ready Graduate Conundrum'. Mike previously launched and developed EC Futures at Coventry University, leading this specialist faculty employability unit to be awarded a Teaching Excellence Award for Employability (2014) and the Best Placement Service in the UK (2015 and 2016) at the National Undergraduate Employability Awards.

Quotes from previous participants of Mike’s training courses:

Mike is an excellent facilitator who speaks with real authority. The session sent me back to the office with new ideas, new contacts and new energy.’

'He allowed discussion but directed us so we never went off track, he delivered with humour which is always good in an environment where there are 25 of you in a room all day.'
