Event description

Description

This year is the tercentenary of Sir Horace Walpole MP, 4th Earl of Orford. Born on 24 September 1717 in London, he was the son of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain's first Prime Minister.

Horace Walpole was par excellence a Georgian man of affairs. Sophisticated, influential, sociable and arbiter of taste. He was a pioneer of the gothic revival long before it even occurred to the Victorians as evidenced by his gothic novel The Castle of Otranto, but most of all in his spectacular country house at Strawberry Hill. Every aspect of the grand villa was devised by Walpole, down to the finest detail. Visitors were encouraged. They were given a guidebook to the property which was written and published by Walpole himself using his own private printing press which was kept on the premises.

Strawberry Hill House was given a major award-winning restoration completed in 2012. It is simply stunning.

We arrive for coffee and biscuits and there follows our tour, led by an experienced guide from the house. It lasts approximately 90 minutes.
