Event description
Street photography in Manchester. I will teach you how to overcome your fear, how to engage with strangers on the street.

About this event

Most people find street photography scary; how do you point a camera at somebody without having a confrontation. If this is how you feel, then I have the street photography workshop for you.

I will teach you how to overcome your fear, how to engage with strangers on the street, how to spot the people you can and cannot take photographs of before you stop them. I teach you how to make somebody comfortable once you have stopped them how to read their body language so that when you start photographing them, they feel amazingly comfortable. how to capture their true personality and more importantly how to have a positive experience both with the person you have chosen to photograph and yourself.

It starts with preparation how to prepare yourself and your camera before you set off on your journey on the streets next is how to observe, what to look for on the streets, how to see what is happening at that moment and what is about to happen before it happens so that you are prepared and ready to grab that perfect shot. next it is down to how to react when you place your camera to your eye, how you react with people, how to stop people how to make them comfortable, so that it becomes a positive experience from both sides of the fence.

Organiser Keith Moss: Keith Moss Photography

Organiser of Street Photography Workshop in Manchester

I love photography, I absolutely love it I know it’s a cliche but it’s my passion. Ask me to choose which is my favourite genre of photography and I would say that would be like asking a parent which is their favourite child. So I will say that my favourite genre of photography is the one I’m doing at the time. If I’m doing street photography I’m in the zone and loving that, If im doing landscape photography I’m being fulfilled loving that, if I’m doing portrait photography whether in the street or in the studio… well you get the picture.

I’ve been lucky enough to have been able to do photography as my job as well as my hobby. Over the last 30 years I’ve worked for many companies working nationally and internationally and for many blue-chip companies such as Unilever, Hilton International Hotels, Barker and Stonehouse, Laura Ashley and Mercabarna which is a wholesale market in Barcelona. I’ve learnt a lot, mostly on the job in the early days to be honest. I didn’t study photography at collage or university I studied it on the job, so to speak. Learning on the job made me think differently and quickly having to solve problems there and then which turned out to be a great advantage.Early on in my career I was a bit embarrassed about being self taught as people seemed to judge me on it but when they saw me work and the images I produced they soon changed their opinion. So I’m proud to say that I’m self taught, I’ve made mistakes but learnt from them and in the days before digital that was expensive both in time and in film. I bought my first camera, an Olympus OM10 and I’d spend days and days just going out and about and in the studio practising, experimenting and learning using both colour and black and white film and then when digital arrived learning that too.

I’ve worked with some of the industry’s most prestigious photography brands, Leica UK, Phase One, and I’m very proud to say that I’m also an Ilford Photo Artisan Partner. They asked me back in 2012 to join this very small group of photographers and obviously jumped at the chance. You can find some of my work for sale there at House of Ilford.

Now I enjoy passing on my experience and the tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way. Teesside university, Newcastle College, Northumbria university, South Essex College, York university and Cleveland College of art and design are among a few Universities and colleges where I’ve really enjoyed being a guest lecturer and run photography workshops

I’ve also mentored many professional photographers through Digital City and Redcar and Cleveland Enterprise and from time to time have contributed to several physical and online photography magazines like Professional Photographer, Amateur Photographer, Digital Photographer, and Photography for Beginners.

My main focus for my workshops is that you enjoy them and have fun and go away feeling a more confident with your own photography. I teach in a practical way showing you how to do things rather than in a classroom sort of environment, there’s no technical language or jargon used and I keep my workshops small so that I can give you plenty of one to one time.

So if you fancy having a go at street photography including street portraiture or dabbling in the darkroom, it would be great to see you.

If you’d like to see some of my work take a look at my website, like my page on Facebook, follow me on twitter or subscribe to my youtube channel.
