Strengthening Cyber Resilience – Networks and Information Systems (NIS) Directive and other major developments

This Round Table, keynoted by Ciaran Martin CEO of NCSC focuses on regulation and accountability and the achievement, despite the many complexities, of a safe and secure cyber environment for the United Kingdom and the resilience to deliver swift recovery should the worst happen.

The NIS and GDPR Directives are about to come into force and their regulatory demands and how to meet them are at the heart of the agenda in May. They will apply whatever the nature of Brexit, but the future relationship of the UK and Europe is likely to have effects on the way cyber resilience is secured and international business is conducted. The international section of the day covers this. The DHS has been invited to give an assessment of where the US stands and of the actions it is taking, to deliver on the Trump Presidential Order.

Officials face a huge challenge in regulating an environment which is subject to such fast changing technological changes and how they are approaching this problem is the theme of a major session in the middle of the day. Effective regulation is bound to be difficult and much will depend upon its successful achievement. For the companies and bodies facing regulation there is an increasingly complex and time consuming compliance burden, with a plethora of authorities involved. How the regulated will navigate their way through this features in a number of panel contributions by representatives of competent authorities tasked with oversight of the cyber domain. Sector knowledge, understanding of new, hybrid and legacy systems, good regulatory practices, legal knowledge and cyber security expertise are all vital to achieving the goals set by the Directives. The agenda offers thinking and guidance on how regulators, the regulated and professional advisers can be as effective as possible.
