Overview

Place-based impact investment (PBII) is gaining momentum as a powerful driver of inclusive local growth across the UK. Recent policy developments signal unprecedented government support for this approach. The Fit for the Future consultation and revised Industrial Strategy emphasise localised solutions to complex challenges, while the creation of the Social Impact Investment Advisory Group by HM Treasury demonstrates clear public sector commitment to partnering with impact capital in delivering the government's missions. The announcement of the £500mn Better Futures Fund and the £5bn Pride in Place programme further indicate the government’s intention to channel funding to places and communities to address key socio-economic challenges.

This momentum creates a pivotal moment for the PBII, giving practitioners an opportunity to demonstrate that complex, systemic challenges can be tackled through solutions embedded in communities and localised expertise. However, a critical gap remains in turning theory to practice: several places in the UK still lack the awareness and capacity needed to effectively channel impact capital toward their most pressing challenges.

Session Format:

This Place Coalition gathering will tackle that challenge head-on. Through dynamic panel discussions and collaborative breakout sessions, participants will:

  • Identify the key barriers preventing local government from fully engaging with place-based impact investment
  • Develop practical strategies to overcome these obstacles
  • Create actionable guidance for place leaders and impact investors
