Event Details

Positive psychology offers the world of coaching something very special – an evidence-based framework and a rich scientific body of work from which to design coaching interventions.

During this session, Lucy Ryan, Director of “Mindspring”, will be digging deeper into two major areas of positive psychology: Character Strengths, and Motivation and Drive. Lucy works with coaches, leaders and managers, introducing them to positive interventions that go beyond the norm. Using cards with a wealth of suggested coaching questions, Lucy’s session will first explore the fundamentals for working with Positive Psychology’s 24 Character Strengths. These go beyond most strengths psychometrics, offering clients a ‘route path’ for growth and development in their life.

Then, utilising Mindspring’s Motivation Scale, she will bring together much of the new body of scientific work around goals and motivation, demonstrating how to work with scale and motivation cards in a practical and interesting way with a client. Within this exercise, she will be discussing the main topics of flow, autonomy, self-efficacy, rewards and teamwork.

Lucy Ryan, Founding Director of the learning consultancy, Mindspring, (,  is one of only a handful of people in Europe with an MSc in Applied Positive Psychology and is at the forefront of the development of positive psychology in Europe. Co-author of the UK’s first well-being curriculum, (‘Well Being Lessons for Secondary Schools’: OUP, 2012), Lucy also developed the UK’s only resilience curriculum for teenagers (SPARK) and an adult corporate Resilience Workshop.

Lucy is a Senior Lecturer at the University of East London and specialises in the application of positive psychology to organisations, with a particular emphasis on strengths based coaching. Lucy is currently studying for a PHD in Leadership and passionate about developing people so that their confidence and natural talents grow and flourish.
