Event description

Description

Enjoy a unique experience from Strolls 'n' Stories. Join Jan Little as she takes you on a walk through picturesque Symonds Yat East, often referred to as the Jewel of the Wye Valley. Walk along the River Wye, stroll up to Symonds Yat Rock (where the peregrines breed in the spring) for a stunning panoramic view of the area. River permitting, cross the river on the little hand ferry and lunch at the old ferry inn. There is a 40 minute river cruise available, weather permitting, for an additional charge of £6.50 payable on the day to the cruise company. Please let Jan know in advance if you would like to do this.

The Wye Valley holds the secrets of many famous people. Walk where Wordsworth walked, and listen to how he found peace here after his torrid love affair in France during the French revolution. Hear the story of the secretive crossings on the hand ferry from He Who Can Not Be Named. Listen to the myths and legends that arise from the geology of the area.

Please note, this walk is very dependent upon the level of the river on the day and could be shorter or longer depending on whether the hand ferry and river cruise are in operation.

Register early. Spaces are limited. Ticket sales close 24 hours prior to the event.

Terrain: The walking portion of this event varies from 2 to 3 miles depending on the river level. There is a short incline of 15 to 20 minutes walking up to Yat Rock. It contains some steps but is suitable for anyone of average fitness.

Where to meet: Symonds Yat East – the car park at the far end of the road, past the Saracens Head. The road stops, you can go no further.

Directions: Symonds Yat East is a few miles off the A40 between Ross on Wye and Monmouth. Just follow the signs for Symonds Yat East. The post code HR9 6JL will take you to the Saracens Head Inn. It is a very narrow road but keep going past the Inn to the end of the road which becomes the car park where we will meet. There is a parking fee.

What to wear: Walking boots or other sturdy footwear is required. Dress for the weather (layers are best).

What to bring: Pack snacks and water. We will stop at the Old Ferry Inn where you may buy your own lunch. Please do not bring pets to the event. Guide dogs and other support animals are welcome.

Age: This event is suitable for ages 12+.

Attendees are responsible for their own safety and come on the walk at their own risk.

Not sure what to expect? Watch some sample videos.
