Overview

Structural Collapse at 138 Hydepark Street, Glasgow - Investigation, Findings, and Lessons Learned

Synopsis:
A four-storey reinforced concrete building at 138 Hydepark Street, Glasgow, collapsed during demolition in January 2025. Investigation revealed multiple latent defects, including poor concrete quality, inadequate reinforcement continuity, and weak structural connections. Core testing showed highly variable concrete strength, particularly in the area of initial failure. These hidden flaws likely contributed to the collapse when the building was in a temporary condition, though the exact cause cannot be definitively determined. This presentation will provide an overview of the uncontrolled collapse, discuss its origins, and explore the key learning points from the incident.
