Event description

Description

Students are the heart of any students’ union (SU), but what can SUs do to help prepare them for their lives after University? And why should SUs get involved in something that is often regarded as the role of the University? This interactive, half day taster session explores ten innovative ways that SUs can develop the employability of their students, starting with their student leaders.

This workshop is ideal for staff members looking to support their students’ employability and professional skills and for officers/student leaders who want help understanding how to use their own SU-developed transferrable skills in their future careers.

By the end of the workshop you will understand:

  • How SUs can develop the employability of your student leaders, from Officers and SU leaders (council members, society chairs, trustees) to student volunteers and employees
  • The challenges that SU Officers face when leaving their organisations and how you can support them in the transition from elected official to graduate employee
  • The current (and future) recruitment practices used by top graduate employers, and how to exploit this knowledge to develop strategies that maximise students’ – and your own – employability
  • How to design employability strategies and activities that complement the work of universities

Plus, you’ll be provided with lots of useful materials, activities and tips that you can take away and include in your student training and development.

Who should attend?

  • Students’ Union staff – particularly those who manage student-staff members or have a student development role
  • SU full-time and part-time Officers
  • University careers staff
  • Other university staff or academics with a remit/projects centred around developing student leaders
  • Student leaders – course representatives, society/sports club committee members, SU council members and trustees

The session will be delivered by Gabi Binnie, Gradconsult

Gabi’s professional career began when she was elected into the role of Welfare Officer for Sheffield Students’ Union. A year spent engrossed in student politics, activism and representation turned her into a self-confessed HE geek and shaped a desire to help students’ unions to unlock the potential in themselves and their students. As a Project Consultant with Gradconsult, Gabi project manages RISE SCR, a Sheffield region-wide programme offering funded recruitment services to SMEs, and has recently finished a seven-month secondment with Kingston University, London, within their careers and employability service (KU Talent).
