Event description
Untutored studio hire for both regular and occasional use

About this event

This is an untutored service for those with prior experience, who have been on a course either with us or elsewhere. It includes use of the wheel and/or work bench, small tools, and firing for earthenware and stoneware.

There are two options: for occasional or intermittent use you can book and pay per slot (please note: this is only for those who have been to the studio previously). For more regular use our membership includes up to 8 sessions per month. Please see the membership page for further details or drop us an email. Studio hire needs to be booked up to 12 hours before each session. Work must be made at the studio (either handbuilt or thrown) and not elsewhere - we don't fire work unless it is made here.

If you haven't previously attended a session (tutored or untutored) at the studio, but are interested in studio hire, please get in touch to arrange a chat and look around. We can then make sure it is the right service for you before booking.

We will be following any Scottish government restrictions in place at the time.

Please bring your own apron and towel (and take them away to wash) and if you have them, bring your own small tools.

Cancel through eventbrite if not coming, with as much notice as possible, so someone else can book. There are five spaces on each session. Three wheels are available on a 'first-come first-served' basis rather than being booked separately. This is to allow more flexibility in the space/use of the time and to prevent wheels being booked out but not used. For example you could use the wheel for part of the session then handbuild or decorate the rest of the time. If the session is full members can arrange between them how to manage the wheel use.

Allow at least 10 mins before the end of each session for clean up of your work area, especially where there are two sessions back to back.

Organiser Cyan Clayworks

Organiser of Studio Hire

Cyan Clayworks was established in 2012 as a Community Interest Company and is a specialist centre for creative learning and making run by Chris Donnelly and Fiona Thompson. It's a working studio, with the bright open plan workspace divided into different areas. An important ethos to this artist run studio is that class sizes are small to allow for enough support for each student.

As practising ceramic artists, trained to postgraduate level, they bring a lot of experience in many aspects of studio practice. Fiona specialises in handbuilding and various approaches to the surface, and established her practice in the mid 1990s. Chris focuses on tableware, both wheelthrown and jigger jollied (a specialist industrial technique adapted for studio use), and has been making work since the mid 1990s also after studying in Canada. Both have exhibited widely, taught in numerous locations and taken part in artist residencies.

Regular courses and bespoke workshops are run at the studio, and individual tuition for all levels of ability is offered. Many professional artists, designers and students have passed through the doors, learning new skills to diversify their own knowledge. Chris and Fiona enjoy working with others and passing on their knowledge and enthusiasm for ceramics.

All the workshops and courses are aimed at adults. It is an open plan work space, and like any ceramic studio, it contains essential machinery, tools/equipment and hazardous raw materials. The studio is therefore not able to accomodate anyone under 17 or adults with complex support needs, for health and safety reasons.

For up to date information relating to any unforseen closures or other restrictions, please see our facebook and twitter feeds.
