“There is something special about studio.”
Studio Properties: A Field Guide to Design Education is the first book in a new series on Design Education by Bloomsbury.
The book has been designed to give design educators and researchers the concepts, scholarship, and language to discuss studio pedagogy with greater confidence. These discussion mater more as the subject faces ongoing pressures to fit further into the structures of traditional academia. But it also reveals the potential and richness of studio as cultures, places, and peoples - when these are allowed to fully emerge and flourish.
The authors will present the book: how it was created, the ideas behind it, and how they hope it will be used by design educators and researchers. We will also discuss what the work reveals about what we still do not know about studio as a mode of education.
Ultimately, we hope the book will offer an important base from which further discussions around studio can emerge. And we look forward to starting that discussion with the DRS Education Community.
