You’ve been invited to: Studland’s Ocean Meadows – the science beneath the surface Wednesday12th November 7-8pm

About this event

We are delighted that Marine Management Organisation (MMO) colleagues and friends of the Studland Bay Marine Partnership (SBMP) Jessica Churchill-Bissett, Head of Marine Conservation and Rachel-Louisa Joyce, Principal Marine Conservation Manager will present the next FREE online talk in our series centering on the scientific and ecological importance of Studland Bay, home to Dorset's largest seagrass meadow.

This is an ideal opportunity for anyone who wants to learn more about the work of the MMO, the remit and reach of the organisation and why and how the MMO have worked with the SBMP in Studland. A great opportunity for Marine Biology and Ocean and Earth Science students, ecologists, conservationists – and anyone who is curious to know more about the wonders of Dorset’s largest seagrass meadow and what lies beneath the waves!

From the start of the SBMP’s journey it was crucial to the partnership that restoration of the seagrass should be evidence driven. To support this a dedicated Research and Monitoring Group (RMG) was created, consisting of representatives from numerous academic institutions, conservation organisations and statutory bodies. As a partnership we are very fortunate to be working with leading experts in marine conservation, with experience across numerous fields including marine ecology, social science, oceanography, marine policy and coastal dynamics. Many of the members of the RMG have been involved directly in working in Studland Bay, bringing the benefits of a wealth of local experience to the team.

The main aims of the Research and Monitoring Group are:

  • Audit existing monitoring and research in Studland Bay
  • Monitor the impacts of the eco-moorings within the VNAZ
  • Identify future research opportunities
  • Support the communication of high quality, evidence-based information.

Jess and Rachel-Louisa will be focussing on what has been achieved at Studland in partnership and also diving in to debunk some marine based myths!

This online event will be hosted by Dorset Coast Forum on behalf of the SBMP with a presentation by the MMO and includes a Q&A opportunity.

We look forward to having you attend the event!
