Join us for a Study Day responding to Collateral Echoes, an immersive and powerful commemoration of Black and immigrant Britons killed after police contact. Blending XR, testimony and poetry, this work embodies nostalgia, loss, grief and joy.
The Study Day is produced by The Culture Team, a feminist cultural production group rooted in radical pedagogy and community-led, arts programming.
Guests will be joined by writer and curator Nydia A. Swaby, who will lead the day. You will hear from different practitioners including psychotherapist and somatic practitioner Muna Mcadie, and community archivist Ella Barrett, who will explore topics such as archival repair, somatic memory and Black feminist care.
“Culturally what’s needed is a way to both insist on the knowing - the sociological knowing, the historical knowing and the psychological knowing by families whose beloved had died at the hands of the police and psychiatric services, that’s also part of the carceral state. There is an insistence that we acknowledge that we (society) work culturally to help people to really face it, own it and know it. Because if it’s not faced it keeps getting buried under the surface and then people say ‘oh that’s not really racism.’” - Gail Lewis', reflections in response to the themes of Collateral Echoes.
Stella Dadzie, activist, historian and educator, has created a set of word puzzles for the day, designed to help younger visitors find an accessible and engaging way to explore the themes of the exhibition.
Please note: The programme’s speakers, session order and timings are subject to change. We will update all registered attendees with any significant changes in advance.
Who is this for: Thinkers, artists, scholars, students, activists, families and anyone interested in Black British histories, memory work and the politics of representation.
