Event description

Description

Linking in with the exhibition Gilded Interiors: French Masterpieces of Gilt Bronze, this Study Day will explore the fashionable interiors of the Louis XVI period. Starting with the role of the architect as interior designer and encompassing the lavish patronage of gilt bronze, porcelain and furniture, the day will include four lectures and a chance to see the special exhibition. Senior Curator Helen Jacobsen will rediscover private spaces used by Marie Antoinette and her brother-in-law, the comte d’Artois, and discuss their taste for gilded and precious objects, while Assistant Curator Laura Langelüddecke will consider Louis XVI’s love of Sèvres porcelain. Independent researcher Christylle Philips will examine the use of gold in neoclassical decoration, from wall panelling to giltwood chairs and picture frames, and reveal the strict codes of etiquette that governed elite interiors.
