Event description

Description

Ministry with and to people over 65 is a much undervalued area of mission and evangelism. We often focus on building our youth and children’s work and yet a 71 year old is 13 times more likely to attend one of our churches than an 18 year old. The Office of National Statistics project that over the next two decades the numbers of over 65s will increase by 48% compared with just 3% among the 20-64 age range. The harvest is ripe for work with older people.

At this study day the Sheffield Diocesan Resource Group for Seniors will launch a new practical resource called “The Blessing of Ageing-Practical Ways of Working with the over 65s.”
The day is sponsored by the Diocesan Board of Faith and Justice and Sheffield Cathedral, and will include teaching from two key note speakers. The Revd. Canon Professor James Woodward will speak on the biblical principles of working with the over 65s. Dr Claire Gardiner will explore the medical and sociological aspects of ageing and loneliness and how to combat them.

This event is free and is open to all, but parishes and Mission Partnerships will benefit most from the day if clergy can bring a small team of people who are willing to work together to develop this mission and ministry in their churches.

Refreshments are available and lunch can be pre-booked (£3 suggested voluntary contribution)

Keynote Speakers:

Revd Professor James Woodward is Principal of Sarum College. As a practical theologian his interests are in areas of health, healing and old age. James is the author of a number of publications including Valuing Age: Mission and Ministry among Older People.
