North Devon Hospice have trained facilitators from the Cheshire and Merseyside Palliative and End of Life Care Network, qualified to deliver this one day programme for both registered and non-registered staff who deal directly with patients and families. (Please note that this programme is not aimed at chaplaincy and pastoral care staff. The needs of chaplains and pastoral care staff are addressed in the accompanying part of the programme 'Bridging the spiritual gap' specifically designed for those staff and offered by Cheshire and Merseyside Palliative and End of Life Care Network).

Being able to explore the spiritual needs of the individual is an essential part of the roles and responsibilities of those working in healthcare in order to meet the holistic needs of those at end of life.

  • Explore the meaning of spirituality and religion

  • Explore the relationship between spirituality and religion for the individual

  • Think about how we recognise spiritual distress

  • Discover a secret simple skills model to confidently embark upon spiritual conversations with safety

  • Learn how best to respond to unexpected questions about your own beliefs

  • Practise recording spiritual and religious needs conversations succinctly

  • Create appropriate spiritual care plans

  • Be aware of the different religious needs and rituals of different faith traditions

  • Become familiar with the different standards and guidelines of local spiritual care policies and how they are met

  • Create an action plan to take back to your workplace

Four sessions of the day:

1. Understanding Meaning
Meanings of spirituality and religion, relationships of spirituality to religion, recognition of spiritual & religious distress.

2. Communication
Opening a conversation about spiritual and religious needs, maintaining it, and helping to make a plan. Handling difficult and personal questions.

3. Recording & Reporting
Concisely recording of the essence of conversations about spiritual and religious needs whilst maintaining confidentiality, handing over to other team members that which it is essential for them to understand and documenting a plan for care.

4. Pulling it all Together
Needs of different faith traditions, rituals and rites of passage, spiritual and religious resources, spiritual care policies, standards and guidelines.

Entry requirements: There are no pre-requistions for this course.
Time:
Registration from 9.15 am. Course runs 9.30 am – 4 pm
Dates: Wednesday 6th March 2019 and Thursday 3rd October 2019.

What if I want to cancel?
If you wish to cancel your booking you will need to give 5 working days notice, as per our booking terms and conditions. Failure to give 5 working days notice or non-attendance will incur a £50 fee per person to cover administration costs, unfortunately as we are a charity this fee is non-negotiable.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?
You can transfer your ticket to another person or to another event, please see full terms and conditions on our website.
