Event description
This SGI reflects on intelligence oversight in the UK to mark the 25th anniversary of the Parliament’s Intelligence & Security Committee

About this Event

The next meeting of the SGI will be at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), Whitehall, London. RUSI have kindly offered us a room for our meeting. RUSI is on the east side of Whitehall, close to the MoD. The nearest tubes are Westminster and Charing Cross.

The morning will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the Parliamentary Intelligence & Security Committee (ISC) as it developed out of the post-Cold War move to place British agencies on a legislative footing. The afternoon will host a more contemporary-focused appraisal of the current and future state of oversight in an increasingly interconnected world of transnational flows in which the public and private sectors’ powers of intrusion continue to grow.

11.15 - Panel: 25 years of the ISC: an assessment

Chaired by Moira Andrews (former Legal Counsel, HMG) with Dr Andrew Defty (University of Lincolnshire), Professor Mark Phythian (University of Leicester), and Peter Gill (independent researcher)

14.00 - Panel: Current and future oversight in the UK

Chaired by Dr Claudia Hillebrand (University of Cardiff) with Dr Jamie Gaskarth (University of Birmingham), Professor Ian Leigh (Durham University), and Dr Emma McCluskey (King's College London)

The charge for registration is £10 reflecting the cost of a sandwich lunch at this venue, which will be served at 13.00. Coffee will be served at RUSI from 10.45. The event will conclude with a meeting of the SGI steering committee at 15.45.
