This technical tour is aimed primarily at postgraduate students and building professionals and will be led by one of the project's more experienced members with significant practical and teaching experience in design and construction.
The tour covers the following subjects: ultra low energy / zero heating / zero carbon / passive solar - house design, earth-sheltering, renewable energy systems, heat pumps, autonomous water services, and sustainable communities lifestyle.
The visit includes:
Site tour from one of the project members who live here – highlighting: what its like to live in the houses, renewable energy systems (wind & solar), autonomous water systems (rainwater collection/treatment, wastewater treatment via reed bed), self-sufficiency (food), waste management (e.g. composting).
Walk through one of the project member's homes, highlighting key environmental features, how the home is designed to only use 10% of a typical UK home, and how individuals can take their own positive actions to reduce energy.
Small exhibition in our sustainable community building and a chance to experience using a compost toilet!
Presentation showing how homes were built, why we choose certain materials and how well they perform.
Suitable for architects, self-builders, developers, university staff & students on relevant courses, planners, building engineers, and other people who are actively seeking detailed practical information on sustainable development.
Numbers are limited. Contact us to set up a tour for your class or group.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
There is limited parking. We can cater for coaches by appointment, and recommend car-sharing where individuals are driving themselves.
What can/can't I bring to the event?

If it has recently rained the ground might be wet & muddy in places.
We permit photographs from outside the homes, but not inside
We will have a range of publications for sale
No dogs should be brought without prior permission
Will there be food and drink?
There will be light refreshments. Please contact us to discuss additional catering requirements.
