Subtraction Cutting masterclass - Tunnel Technique (starter)

"Many garments are created from flat pattern making methods, or from drape methods, but a method of “hollow construction” has been created by fashion designer Julian Roberts. This pattern cutting technique known as “Subtraction Cutting” makes the most of the negative spaces that can be opened up in fabric and falls somewhere between traditional pattern making and drape resulting in experimental garments that break the boundaries of the usual garment shapes.

The resulting garments make the most of the volume of the fabric and often look incredibly complex. Individual garments are often very reminiscent of the work of Japanese designers such as Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto and can also often be worn in more than one way, using the placement of your body and limbs to change the shape of the garment"

- The Cutting Class

This is a 3 hour live Subtraction Cutting masterclass in which you will be introduced to Julian's design philosophy and talked through the process of creating a 'Tunnel Technique' dress/robe. This is a practical workshop, so you will need to attend from the start time and have fabrics and a sewing machine in order to participate. You can work half-scale or full-scale. Julian will be demonstrating a half-scale version, with a revision video available to participants to watch at their leisure showing a full-scale version. Instructions will be sent to you in advance so you know exactly what material quantities and equipment are needed, and can prepare patterns for the start of the class.

The masterclass is highly visual, with images and videos shown throughout, and is delivered in English language. Subtitles are not available.
