Every Life Matters is offering free Suicide Alertness Bitesize training sessions in Ulverston.

These one-hour sessions are designed for community members to gain confidence in discussing suicide and supporting those in need.

In 2023, the Westmorland and Furness Council area had the 10th highest rate of suicide deaths in England. To address this, they are reaching out to community groups, workplaces, churches, sports clubs, and friends who can provide a venue for groups of five or more.

This one hour face to face training session is aimed at anyone who wants to understand more about suicide, how to know when someone may be having thoughts of suicide, how to talk directly and comfortably about suicide, and what we can all do to offer practical support. The session covers;

  • Getting informed about suicide
  • Being aware of the signs someone may be having thoughts of suicide
  • The importance of asking directly
  • Listening compassionately
  • Building support around the person
  • Being willing to check in
  • Looking after yourself

Around 1 in 5 of us will have thoughts of suicide during our lifetime. It is a common response to stressful and overwhelming life events. We believe that Suicide prevention is everyone’s business. That it is family, friends, colleagues, neighbours and those closest to us that are most able to understand when someone is at risk of suicide, and to support that person to take the first steps towards getting help.

This session is delivered in person by our dedicated and experienced suicide prevention trainers. Participants also receive a PDF course worksheet and a post course handbook.

Every Life Matters strives to take a fresh, innovative and long term approach to suicide prevention and suicide bereavement support in Cumbria - a county that has had suicide rates well above the national average for too many years. At the heart of our approach to suicide prevention is the belief that all members of our local community can have a part to play in suicide prevention. Our training aims to reduce the stigma attached to suicide, increase understanding of when someone is at risk of suicide, raise awareness of how to practically support someone, and the range of services and resources available for people in our communities experiencing suicidal thoughts.
