Suicide Awareness Training

Primary care settings often serve as the first point of contact for individuals experiencing emotional distress or suicidal thoughts. While clinical staff are trained to manage mental health crises, non-clinical staff such as receptionists, administrative personnel, and support workers also play a vital role in recognising and responding to potential warning signs.

This Suicide Awareness Training is designed to equip non-clinical staff with the knowledge and confidence to identify signs of distress, respond appropriately, and know when and how to escalate concerns to clinical colleagues.

While non-clinical staff are not expected to diagnose or counsel individuals, being aware, compassionate, and responsive can make a critical difference. This training empowers staff to be part of a whole-practice approach to suicide prevention, helping to create a safer and more supportive environment for all patients.

Training Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of suicide awareness in a primary care context.
  • Recognise common warning signs and risk factors of suicidal ideation.
  • Respond to individuals who may be experiencing emotional distress with empathy and without judgment.
  • Appreciate the boundaries of the non-clinical role and how to access further support.
