A half day online courses teaching the knowledge and understanding to help someone having thoughts of suicide

About this Event

Course overview

This course teaches and practices the skills and knowledge needed to identify someone who may be thinking about suicide and competently intervene to help create suicide-safety as a first aid approach.

The course is taught using tutor-facilitated Socratic learning, tutor-led role-play, mini-lectures, group work and audio-visual presentations. This is a highly interactive and emotionally engaging learning experience delivered via Zoom.

No previous experience or training is required. Participants will be asked to self-reflect and empathise with a person having thoughts of suicide.

Learning outcomes:

  • Suicide behaviour; reasons and magnitude of the community health problem.
  • Role of the carer in managing suicide interventions; different roles with different people
  • Understand approaches and process of suicide intervention including desired outcomes
  • Understand the importance of self-reflection and personal impact when working with suicide and people at risk

Grassroots are pleased to offer places on our suicide prevention training, funded by Public Health at Brighton & Hove City Council.

To be eligible for a funded place you need to be working in the Brighton & Hove area with people at socio-economic disadvantage.

This includes individuals experiencing

  • financial hardship due to debt
  • under or unemployment
  • gambling
  • income reduction related to covid-19
  • inequality due to ethnicity, gender, sexuality, gender identity.

The following exclusion criteria apply to eligibility for funded places:

  • People not working or volunteering within Brighton & Hove City (City boundary here)
  • Employees of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

If you are purchasing on behalf of others, please ensure you have the full information for each participant as you will be asked to fill out details on booking. Please note that each purchase counts towards your organisation's yearly allocation, and that spaces are not transferable to other courses or dates.

The booking price covers administrative fees and as such is non-refundable. In the event that you cannot attend, please provide the details of anyone attending in your place.

Pre-training requirement

No previous experience or training is necessary. Participants will be asked to self-reflect and empathise with a person having thoughts of suicide.


Participants will gain 6 QCF credit points at Level 4 by completing a workbook of tasks that are assessed against the set learning outcomes.

The qualification costs £85 per learner (optional and extra to subsidised place)
