Suicide Prevention Training for Frontline Workers in Liverpool 2019

Background

Liverpool is a signatory to the Cheshire and Merseyside Zero Suicide Strategy for 2015- 2020. The vision for the strategy is:

•The region becomes a place where suicides are eliminated and where people do not consider suicide as a solution to the difficulties they face.

•Where Cheshire and Merseyside becomes a region which supports people at a time of personal crisis and builds individual and community resilience for improved lives.

Suicide is a major social and public health issue. It is a cause of early death and increased mortality rates, and is seen as an indicator of underlying rates of mental ill-health. The impact on family and friends can be devastating and it carries a huge financial burden for the local economy and contributes to worsening inequalities. Families and friends are up to 3 times more at risk of taking their own lives and they experience severe effects on their health, quality of life, ability to function well at work and in their personal lives.

One of the major objectives of the strategy is to have a workforce which is formally trained in suicide prevention interventions.

Suicide Prevention Training

This ½ day training is aimed at frontline staff who are most likely to come into contact with people who are distressed and vulnerable during their day to day work.

The training aims to:

•Increase participants’ understanding and knowledge of practical suicide prevention techniques.

•Enable participants to confidently make appropriate and timely interventions if they think someone is feeling suicidal.

The half day workshop will:

•Dispel some of the myths around suicide

•Equip participants with more confidence, so they feel able to identify people who may be vulnerable and to raise the issue of suicide with people they support.

•Emphasise that suicide prevention is everybody’s business.

There will be sessions held throughout the year, but places will be limited to 10 participants per session. Some of the sessions will be targeted at specific workplaces/workers and others will be open to all and advertised on Eventbrite. Please go to www.eventbrite.co.uk/ and search for “Suicide Prevention Training for Frontline Workers in Liverpool 2018 - 2019.”

Would all participants report to Reception on the 4th Floor at least 5 minutes prior to session commencing and bring your own refreshments with you. There is a refreshment area on the ground floor in Cunard where drinks/snacks may be purchased.
