Akemi Lucas is a Japanese calligraphy master/artist and one of the most popular and demanded instructors at HYPER JAPAN.

Her distinct style of calligraphy builds on traditional skills, and further embodies of fusion of the ancient and the modern, the eastern and the western, and the before and the after.

Currently, she is based in the UK and predominantly working on exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops, and commissions. Her artworks were used in the 2019 Rugby World Cup and a multi-media advertising campaign for the main sponsor of the British Olympic team for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Join her to explore the ancient Japanese art of Sumi-e ink painting to draw " Roses with 想 - thinking of you" ahead of Valentine's day.

You will learn to draw above images (sumi-ink only and with a colour of your choice for petals) at the workshop.

Workshop plan

Please prepare all the equipment listed below by yourself before the workshop starts.

1. Greeting & Explanation of the lesson plan
2. Warm-up exercises
3. Practice of basic stroke of “想 – thinking of you”
4. Stroke order of “想 – thinking of you”
5. Introduction of Rose brush techniques – flower petals, buds, leaves and stems
6. (10min break time)
7. Ink control
8. Order of painting and layout
9. Creating artworks in Sumi (black ) first
10. (short break time)
11. Explaining how to use colours for petals and sepals
12. Completing artworks stems and leaves in Sumi, sepals & flower petals in your favourite colour or colour of your choice. And writing “想 -thinking of you”.
13. Q&A time

You will be sent some layouts for the art work prior to the workshop and these layouts may look lightly different from the pictures shown on this page.

Akemi will assess your work for comments by sending your work through HYPER JAPAN after the workshop.

Equipment needed for the workshop

Please prepare all the equipment listed below by yourself before the workshop starts.

1. 2 or 3 or more brushes (Japanese Calligraphy Brushes – 1 x thick, 1 x medium and 1 x thin brush – or any other watercolour paint brush)
2. Ink: black calligraphy ink ( or black watercolour ink)
3. Gansai Paint: your favourite or any colour of your choice (or water colour paint is fine)
4. Paper: Calligraphy – Hanshi – paper, roughly 30 papers ( or packing papers)
5. Five small plates for ink and ink stone if you have
6. Cloth (felt): put under the paper.
7. Paperweight (or anything heavy to put on the paper or Washi paper to fix)
8. Water for washing brush & diluting ink ( water in a jam jar etc.)
9. Some Kitchen towel or tissue papers
